Careers in the classroom: Ways to integrate industry partnerships, mentorships, and portfolio through project-based learning. Presenters: IxD faculty Nicole Chan, Luke Johnson, and Maxim Safioulline SMC’s IxD program has partnered with several well-known corporations such as Red Bull, Activision, and Hulu to give students hands-on experiences with real life projects. These collaborations help students add professional experience and skills to their resumes and projects to their portfolios. In this interactive workshop IxD faculty will share their process for embedding industry engagement as well as career preparation into their courses. DSPS services and proctoring process Presenters: Nathalie Laille - DSPS Coordinator, Denise Henninger - DSPS Manager, Carla Alvarado - DSPS Specialist In this workshop, the Center for Students with Disabilities ( also known as DSPS) will present an overview of student accommodations and services. An emphasis will be placed on proctoring services and the process for a faculty member to submit an exam and students to schedule a proctoring appointment. What is it about bathrooms? The politics of restroom access and the LGBTQ+ experience. Presenters: Steph Anderson, PhD and Yamissette Westerband, MA, MSW, PhD Having access to public restrooms is a basic human right and need. For LGBTQ+ students, navigating gender segregated bathrooms can significantly impede their educational experience and success. In this presentation we’ll discuss the history, politics, and current political landscape impacting access to gender segregated and all gender restrooms. We’ll go into details discussing the actions SMC is taking around creating gender inclusive restrooms on our campus. We’ll provide details about how SMC is working to create more gender inclusive restrooms on our campus and how you can be an ally. Seasons of Change: Equipping Today’s Leadership to Empower Tomorrow’s Legacy. Presenter: Arianne J. Toves, MPA. Arianne Toves is an Educational Trainer working to equip, empower and educate individuals and organizations on the principles and practices of Behavioral Change Management and Organizational Leadership. More details about Arianne Toves below. Description: How do we navigate through seasons of change and times of transition? What do we do when change happens too quickly and threatens the collapse of what we worked so hard to build? And what do we do when there’s resistance to change, yet change is inevitable? Learning to lead through seasons of change requires a strength based approach that recognizes the talents and sacrifices of builders, while preparing ourselves for the inevitable growth of new and diverse leadership More about Arianne Toves: Arianne has worked within the Mental Health and Educational fields as a Counselor and Certificated Teacher and most recently stepped into a role within the 988 National Suicide and Prevention Hotline. Arianne holds an Associate of Communications degree, Bachelors of Psychology and a Masters of Public Administration from USC, along with a Single Subject Teaching Credential and is a Certified Mental Health Counselor. Arianne is the proud mother of three children and resides in Clovis, CA where she spends her free time watching her youngest son play competitive men’s volleyball and volunteers within the community. International Ed post Covid: Reimagining study abroad Presenters: Delphine Broccard & Denise Kinsella One of SMC’s Institutional Learning Outcomes is for students to “respect the inter-relatedness of global human environment, engage diverse peoples [and] acknowledge the significances of their daily actions relative to broader issues and events.” Since its inception, the Global Citizenship Committee has dedicated itself to broadening students’ perspectives through study abroad programs. Professionalism 101: Business Practices for Today’s Diverse Workforce. Presenter: Arianne J. Toves, MPA. Arianne Toves is an Educational Trainer working to equip, empower and educate individuals and organizations on the principles and practices of Behavioral Change Management and Organizational Leadership. More details about Arianne Toves below. Description: Today’s workforce has the unique makeup of interconnecting four generations: Baby Boomers, GenX’ers, Millennials, and GenZ’ers. Each generation comes with their own lived experiences, sets of social norms and varied values systems. Working with such a diverse cultural landscape can be a recipe for conflict without understanding the differences, and shared goals each generation brings to the workplace. How can we better understand ourselves and those we work with to minimize conflict and build collaborative cooperation? Come learn the principles of Professionalism 101 and tools to apply them within your own unique work environment. Title: SB 1343 – Mandated sexual harassment prevention training for non-supervisors
(1 ½ hour) Presenters: Human Resources This session is for non-supervisors such as faculty, department chairs, classified staff, seasonal and temporary employees. This interactive session will cover sexual harassment, unlawful discrimination, abusive conduct, and Title IX. It also addresses emerging issues, and your rights in the workplace! Completing this session satisfies California state mandate that all employees complete this training at least once every two years. SMC’s current two-year compliance cycle is 2023/2024. This is a great time to use this is opportunity to fulfill your legal obligation and to ask questions.
