Assessment Policies

You are required to complete both English or ESL and math placements if:

• Enrolling in more than six (6) units during your first semester (fall or spring) and your educational goal is to get a degree or certificate, transfer, of pursuing basic skills instruction; or

• Enrolling in an English, ESL, or math class for the first time; or

• Completed your first semester at SMC and did not complete the mandatory placement process, but now wish to enroll in a second regular semester (Fall or Spring) term.

Please note: This process can only be completed once.  

Concurrent enrollment students must follow and complete SMC's placement process for English or ESL and math. You can do so by logging into your Corsair Connect account and find placement in the right hand corner of the screen. This process can only be completed once.

You may be temporarily waived from placements if you are:

• Enrolling in only up to six (6) units during your first semester (Fall or Spring) AND not enrolling in English/ESL, math, or chemistry classes.

• Enrolling in only Winter or Summer classes (not in English/ESL, Math, or chemistry classes).

If you have completed college coursework at another Institution or taken your AP exams, you may submit a waivers request through SMC's Waivers and Exemptions process.

You must complete the SMC placement process to be eligible to enroll in SMC classes. SMC will not accept other schools' placement recommendations. 

Placement results do not expire. If you have questions or concerns regarding your placements, please speak with a counselor, current SMC English, ESL,  or Math instructor, or email the Success and Engagement Center at SuccessandEngagement@smc.edu to discuss your options to challenge.

 

English as a Second Language(ESL) results do not expire.

Starting Summer 2021, ESL placement will be completed online through your Corsair Connect account. 

Retesting for the Chemistry Challenge is permitted twice within the calendar year (calendar year is defined as the date of when your first test was completed). You may retest only once after two weeks has passed.

Government-Issued Photo ID Required 

When proctoring an examination in the Success and Engagement Center, a government-issued identification will be requested.

• Valid government-issued photo identification such as passport, driver's license, state ID, or high school picture ID card, is required for testing.

• Undocumented students who do not have a government-issued ID may present their high school ID, yearbook, matricular/consular ID card, or a financial institution's card having a picture on it.

• The Success and Engagement Center reserves the right to ask for a secondary form of ID. A student ID card may be used only as a secondary form of identification.

• All acts of attempted impersonation and impersonation and use of fraudulent ID cards/passports will be reported to Student Judicial Affairs for adjudication. College Police may also be contacted.
