CMD Campus

Designing the Future

Located in the heart of Silicon Beach, the new Center for Media and Design at Santa Monica College unites all SMC programs focused on media content development and design.

Santa Monica College Center for Media and Design

Santa Monica College reconstructed, reconfigured, and expanded the previous entertainment and technology facilities on Stewart Street, transforming the complex into the visionary Center for Media and Design.

A Dynamic Campus

The Center for Media and Design at Santa Monica College has state-of-the-art spaces fostering collaboration, creativity, and innovation in programs of film, animation, graphic design, architecture, interior architectural design, media broadcasting, digital media post-production, journalism, Esports, promo pathways, and our bachelor’s degree program in interaction design.

Advanced, Collaborative Spaces

This 3.5-acre campus houses a two-story, 80,000-square-foot Media and Design instructional facility with an 180-seat auditorium, a large production suite with control booths for broadcasting and film, multiple editing bays for post-production work, high-end computer classrooms, and a radio broadcast suite as well as classrooms, collaboration spaces, and other student support services and amenities.

At the center of the complex is a beautiful 18,000-square-foot landscaped courtyard with water features and an outdoor performance stage. A separate three-story building for KCRW is a part of the courtyard and a seven-level parking structure equipped with EV charging stations is on Campus adjacent to Pennsylvania Avenue.

Competitive Edge

Some 2,000 students take classes or work on individual or group projects on the campus. Students have competitive internship opportunities at KCRW, which is housed on the campus, as well as at numerous nearby tech and media companies.

The Center’s approach emphasizes collaboration, hands-on learning, and experimentation, providing opportunities to leverage the blurring of distinctions between traditional disciplines.

Foundation for Career Success

Each of the Center’s core instructional programs fosters career success while also effectively preparing students who plan to transfer to a four-year college or art school.

Student Success

The value and success of these programs are evident in the acclaim and awards garnered by student works, as well as the many job placements and continuing employment of SMC students and graduates. Within the SMC community, these creative disciplines are sought out by other campus programs to collaborate on a myriad of projects, from world premiere musicals to broadcasting athletic games, and from promotional materials and videos to documentary production.
