Communication and media studies is an extremely versatile field with many career applications.
Courses combine theory and practice, encouraging students to apply classroom concepts
to real-world contexts. This far-reaching program prepares you for entry-level roles,
including marketing manager, editor, copywriter, advertising and promotions coordinator,
PR specialist, market research analyst, reporter, correspondent, and more.
From the outset, our program addresses communication theory while helping you build
strong oral communication skills. Study the dynamics, nuances, and cultural differences
in communication between individuals in society, as well as among various groups.
Understand global communication trends and how they impact consumer purchase decisions.
You will also present your ideas and arguments in a variety of contexts, in preparation
for personal presentations, upper-division coursework, and workplace settings.

Students pursuing the Associate in Arts in Communication Studies for Transfer will
demonstrate, through written and oral academic work, knowledge of communication principles,
concepts, and theories, and be prepared to pursue further study In communication studies
or a similar major at the baccalaureate level at the California State University.
This program will provide hands-on training in the areas of Television, Radio, and
Internet Broadcasting. You will be prepared for both employment opportunities in the
broadcasting industry and transfer to four-year programs.

Communication Studies courses take place at the Center for Media and Design and the
Bundy Campus. At the Center for Media and Design, you can find state-of-the-art equipment,
a computer lab with software for your classes, tutoring resources, and more! Bundy
houses the nursing program, teacher-training program, continuing and community education
classes, and a host of general education courses.
Many colleges and universities offer baccalaureate degrees in this field. Students
planning to transfer to a four-year college or university need to know which courses
completed at Santa Monica College will be accepted at the specific college/university.
