Chemistry Program

Welcome to SMC's Chemistry Program

The Chemistry Program at SMC provides instruction in these three areas; General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Biochemistry.

  • General Chemistry introduces principles of chemical structure and reactivity that are the foundation for all other fields of chemistry.
  • Organic Chemistry is the study of substances that contain molecules with a carbon backbone. These are vitally important molecules, as they comprise all living things.
  • Biochemistry applies the concepts of organic chemistry to molecules and reactions that occur within living organisms. It represents the intersection of the fields of chemistry and biology.

Chemistry is often called the central science because it relates to so many other fields of study. Those who learn chemistry gain a far better understanding of the natural world around us. This knowledge is valuable for all people, and also provides a necessary basis for understanding medicine, pharmacy, engineering, forensics, environmental sciences, geology, and other related fields.

Transfer Preparation

Many colleges and universities offer baccalaureate degrees in this field. Students planning to transfer to a four-year college or university need to know which courses completed at Santa Monica College will be accepted at the specific college/university. Please consult a Counselor. SMC has transfer articulation agreements with the many UC and CSU campuses, as well as many private and out-of-state institutions.
