About the Music Programs

The Music Department offers classes that meet the transfer requirements of most four-year universities for a music major. This includes a four-semester sequence of music theory and musicianship, class instruction of instruments and voice, personal instruction of instruments and voice for applied program students, as well as music history and appreciation.

Associate in Arts Degree

The Music Associate in Arts degree provides educational opportunities designed to meet the needs of students who wish to explore and expand their knowledge, performance skills, and appreciation of music.


Appllied Music

Applied Music

Certificate of Achievement

This Certificate program develops a student’s musical skills through one-on-one instruction and regular performance opportunities. Areas of study include instrumental, vocal, and composition.

Certificate of Achievement

This Certificate program develops a student’s guitar performance skills with strumming and fingerstyle techniques in a variety of styles, technical knowledge of the instrument, familiarity with the repertoire, and skills in collaborative performance.

This Certificate program develops a student’s upper-intermediate to early-advanced piano skills, including technique, familiarity with standard repertoire, stylistic interpretation of works of various historical style periods, sight reading ability, performing collaboratively, and balancing parts within a musical texture.


Resources and Transfer

Students planning to transfer to a four-year college or university should meet with a counselor to discuss which courses need to be taken at SMC before applying to your colleges/universities.

Mentor Program

A concentrated group of talented music students who have been invited to explore and develop their artistic practice in an experimental and interdisciplinary manner.

Performing Art Center

Music classes take place at the Performing Art Center. The performing arts complex includes The Broad Stage (opens in new window) and Edye Second Space.

Transfer Preparation

Many colleges and universities offer baccalaureate degrees in this field. Students planning to transfer to a four-year college or university need to know which courses completed at SMC will be accepted at the specific college/university.
