The Performing Arts Campus, located at 11th Street and Santa Monica Boulevard, provides music students with a conservatory atmosphere as well as ample parking. The SMC Shuttle Service runs throughout the day Monday through Friday to ensure the ease of taking classes at multiple campuses.
The highlight of the Performing Arts Campus is The Broad Stage. The state of the art, acoustically outstanding 499-seat auditorium serves as an ideal venue for music students to develop their performing abilities.
The Broad Stage’s accompanying rehearsal space, The Edye Second Space, is an effective area to develop skills before taking them to the big stage. Some of the smaller performing groups give their performances in this 100-seat space.
The Music Department has more than 30 practice rooms available to students enrolled in applied music courses. All are air-conditioned with a piano. The Music Media Lab consists of nine student workstations, each of which has ear training, music notation, MIDI sequencing, and interactive CD-ROM software. Students are required to use the resources in the Music Media Lab on a regular basis as an adjunct to the regular classroom instruction.
All of the classrooms in the music building have modern projection technology that allows professors to more effectively utilize audio and visual examples in class. There are also two piano classrooms, each containing 20 pianos with individual headsets for group piano classes.
