His work has been awarded grants from the City of Santa Monica, Durfee Foundation, National Performance Network, Ford Foundation and the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. Most recently, D’Lo was awarded the Artist Disruptor Fellowship for TV Writing through the Center for Cultural Performance and 5050x2020 an initiative started by Joey Soloway; as well as the Civic Media Fellowship through USC's Annenberg Innovation Lab funded by the MacArthur Foundation; a Cultural Trailblazer Award from the City of Los Angeles’ Department of Cultural Affairs, and a Sherwood Award Finalist through Center Theater Group. Outside of performing and presenting on the university/college circuit and facilitating writing/performance workshops, his work has been published and/or written about in academic journals, literary anthologies, and print/online journalism sources, such as The Guardian, NBC, and The Advocate. He was invited to be a commentator on CNN, has appeared in Buzzfeed and Fusion videos, and the award-winning documentary PERFORMING GIRL centers his queerstory as a trans artist.
"Some of the themes of my work are influenced by and speak to: immigrant experiences in America, queer stories of resilience, journeys through trans masculinity, and QTBIPOC community conversations on mental health and surviving/thriving. My primary motivation for engaging in the practice of comedic/dramedy storytelling (whether on stage, screen or page) is explicitly related to community healing. "

From the Illustrious Southside of Chicago and Grandchild of the incomparable Gracie Lee Fowler, Romeo Jackson (They/Them) is a first-generation Black college graduate, Queer, Non-Binary Femme scholar. Romeo has co-authored book chapters on trans experiences in, out, and beyond higher education. They have created frameworks to center queer and trans people of color experiences, and peer review articles on the state of LGBTQ research in higher education. Jackson also has forthcoming entries in the Encyclopedia of Queer Studies in Education on Gender-Based Microaggressions, Anti-Blackness, Settler colonialism, and Transnormativity. Additionally, they wrote chapters in Deconstructing Whiteness Higher Education & Student Affairs: Theoretical and Practical Considerations for the Pursuit of Racial Justice on Campus and Teaching and Learning for Social Justice in Higher Education.

Pidgeon Pagonis has slowly, oftentimes not so quietly risen to visibility in Chicago as not only an activist on behalf of intersex people, but also as a fighter for the recognition of marginalized others in general, regardless of race, sex or gender identity, class or creed. Whether advancing youth advocacy with interACT, producing informational videos that go viral on Buzzfeed, writing for Everyday Feminism or appearing on the cover of National Geographic “Gender Revolution” special issue, Pidgeon has staked out a place at the fore of debates on intersexuality and otherness.
What is Intersex? Even though there are about as many intersex people as there are people with red hair, the term is not well understood. According to the Free & Equal Intersex Fact Sheet: Intersex people are born with sex characteristics that do not fit typical binary notions of male or female bodies. Intersex is an umbrella term used to describe a wide range of natural bodily variations. In some cases, intersex traits are visible at birth while in others, they are not apparent until puberty or may not be physically apparent at all.

Come join our Art Department and Pride Center for a night of Art (Food and Art Supplies are provided). We will be utilizing multiple forms to create and express the theme of “Pride is Love”. This year’s theme coincides with the theme for the LA Pride Parade and will also be an opportunity for folks who want to participate in the Parade with SMC this year to create something for the event.
Possible artmaking options:
- Sewing demo and we can make wearables- bring existing clothing we can add things to, we have a fabric printer so we can print on garments as well
- Banner making. We can provide paper, paint, cardboard and vinyl printer. Students can make their own signs/banners and we can photograph to make one large banner. We can encourage students to make stencils for spray painting, perhaps we can do a silkscreen demo for shirts.
- Personal Flag making, we can use the Felting Loom to make personalized flags with wooden dowls for students to carry for pride.
- Sticker making
