International Student F-1 Visas Impact Update
Sent on behalf of the SMC Federal Action Impact Analysis Team & SMC Senior Administration
SMC Colleagues:
As reported by various news outlets, international student F-1 visas have been cancelled at many colleges and universities across the country. At Santa Monica College, thus far, 7 of our international students from various regions worldwide have had their F-1 visas terminated by the federal government in SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) (opens in new window) .
SMC International Education Center (IEC) staff have met individually with impacted students to connect them with available resources. The College is in communication with the California Attorney General’s office, in coordination with the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, regarding the federal government’s actions.
We understand this can be an extremely stressful time for many in our community. Please note that SMC will continue to support you and our students. We encourage you to make use of the following resources and services as we navigate these challenging times together—SMC students will also receive a version of this message and the list below:
- Mental/Emotional Health Support for International Students: International students have access to a specially-designated therapist from the SMC Center for Wellness & Wellbeing (CWW) embedded within the IEC. The therapist is available Tuesdays (in-person), Wednesdays
(remote), Thursdays (in-person) and can be contacted by email: cww@smc.edu or by submitting an initial appointment request form (opens in new window) . Services are free and confidential.
- Non-international students may also reach out to the Center via the CWW webpage or walk in to make an appointment. Visit the main office or one of the many special programs or satellite campuses to find a therapist to connect with. There is also a confidential 24/7 emotional support hotline 800-691-6003 exclusively for SMC students.
- Support for SMC Employees: The EASE Program – accessible via 800-882-1341 – provides free face-to-face counseling, phone consultations, and community referrals to employees who may be facing a range of issues including anxiety and stress.
- Important Immigration Information & Support:
The College continues to actively monitor all developments in federal policy that might have an impact on our community. As one of the most diverse college campuses in the nation, SMC reiterates our institutional commitment to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for all. As challenging and uncertain situations occur, we will remain focused on solutions, together.
