Welcome SMC First Generation College Students!

 

Who are first generation college students?

  • No parent in the household has a bachelor's degree from the U.S. 
  • Students will be the first in their family to attend college (younger siblings of older college-going siblings are still considered first-gen).

2024 First Gen College Student Day

We are excited to invite you to celebrate First-Generation College Day with us this November 8th! This day honors students who are the first in their family to attend college, recognizing their unique challenges and remarkable achievements. At SMC, we are proud to support and uplift our first-generation college student community. 

In honor of First-Gen Day, SMC will be hosting two events to celebrate and support our first-generation community:

Virtual Event - Friday, November 8th, 10:00 A.M. – 12:00 P.M. via Zoom 

  • Join us for a First-Generation Panel featuring SMC faculty, staff, and administrators who will share their own journeys. 

In-Person Event - Thursday, November 14th, 10:00 A.M. – 2:00 P.M.  

Location – Cayton Student Lounge 

  • We are honored to have Dr. Llanet Martín, Ph.D. – Dean of Equity, Pathways, & Inclusion, as our keynote speaker. She will share her experience as a first-generation scholar and leader. 
  • We will also be hosting a resource fair with programs, support services, and workshops specifically designed to assist first-generation students. Students will have the opportunity to explore the many resources available to help them thrive in their academic journeys.
