Distance Education for Faculty

Faculty Studio Lab

To enhance the production process in the studio lab, faculty will work closely with the Distance Education Team, specifically the Instructional and Universal Designer (IUD). The IUD will conduct course reviews and analyses for faculty, identify opportunities and needs for various instructional videos, and provide recommendations to improve course content. Based on these insights, the IUD will collaborate with faculty to create a structured action plan ensuring that video production aligns with pedagogical goals and accessibility standards for their online and/or hybrid courses. This collaborative effort will support faculty in developing high-quality, engaging digital course materials tailored to student learning needs and aligned with student learning outcomes.

Pre-Production

Pre-production planning is an integral part of successful instructional media projects. Our faculty will collaborate with the Instructional and Universal Designer and Instructional Media Specialist to receive guidance through the lecture media planning process, from scripting and storyboarding to studio introduction and talent casting. Our goal is to help bring our faculty's vision to life while creating well-executed videos that align with SMC's brand and keep students engaged in their courses.

The Instructional Faculty Studio is situated on the third floor of the Student Services Center (SSC), within the Academic Affairs suite. This studio offers a well-lit, quiet, and semi-soundproof environment, fully equipped with professional-grade technology to support high-quality video and audio recording. Designed to enhance faculty content creation, the space provides an ideal setting for recording lectures, instructional videos, and other multimedia materials. Faculty members have access to three distinct recording options, allowing for flexibility based on their specific needs and preferences:

  • Lecture Capture
  • Interview Style Videos
  • Podcast Recording

Reserve Studio

Lecture Capture

Easily record lectures and presentations so students can watch anytime. Our studio features a high-end camera, podcast-style microphone, and seamless slide capture for polished content.

Interview Style

Bring guest speakers and experts into your lessons with professional, engaging interviews. The studio setup includes top-quality microphones, lighting, and camera angles for dynamic discussions.

Podcast Recording

Create audio-only lessons, discussions, or storytelling for students on the go. Our studio ensures crystal-clear sound with high-quality microphones and soundproofing.

Post-Production

We will be able to deliver all raw recordings to faculty on the same day by sharing the files via the cloud or transferring them directly to their computers or thumb drives. Faculty can then edit and publish their videos in their Canvas courses independently. Alternatively, if the faculty is new to video editing, they can use this guide to video editing (opens in new window) to learn more about the process. As an additional option, our Instructional Media Specialist can collaborate with faculty to transform recordings into polished products with some light editing.
