WHAT TO PREPARE
- Please prepare 16 bars of a song in the style of the show (think playful, character-driven musical theater). \
- Bring a headshot & résumé (if you have them) and be ready to list any conflicts.
ROLES
The Cat in the Hat
The mischievous, whimsical narrator who guides Jojo and the audience through the story. Playful, energetic, and full of surprises. A master of comedic timing with strong physicality.
Vocal Range: F2 – F4 or Bb3 – F5
Jojo
A young thinker from Whoville with a big imagination. Jojo is curious, kind-hearted, and learns to embrace their unique way of seeing the world.
Vocal Range: Ab3 – C5
Horton the Elephant
A gentle, kind-hearted elephant who believes in the power of friendship and loyalty. Horton is ridiculed for believing in the Whos but never gives up.
Vocal Range: A2 – F4
Gertrude McFuzz
A shy but determined bird who longs for Horton’s attention. Struggles with self-confidence but learns that being true to oneself is enough.
Vocal Range: F3 – F5
Mayzie La Bird
A fabulous, flashy, and self-absorbed bird who loves attention. Convinces Horton to care for an egg but ultimately leaves him to do all the work.
Vocal Range: G3 – Eb5
Sour Kangaroo
A sassy, skeptical, and soulful character who doesn’t believe in Horton’s Whos and makes fun of him. Often played with a gospel/soulful vocal style.
Vocal Range: F#3 – F5
Mr. & Mrs. Mayor
Jojo’s loving but worried parents, leaders of Whoville. They struggle to understand their child’s imagination.
Vocal Range: C3 – A4 or Bb3 – F5
The Wickersham Brothers
A trio (or more) of mischievous, jazzy monkeys who torment Horton and cause chaos. They are full of energy, rhythm, and attitude.
Vocal Range: G3 – G4
The Bird Girls
Mayzie’s stylish and sassy backup singers. Often harmonize and move as a trio.
Vocal Range: F3 – Bb5
The Grinch
A cameo role with attitude. Might be double-cast with another ensemble role.
The General (General Genghis Khan Schmitz)
A pompous and commanding military leader who sends Jojo to military school.
Vocal Range: Bb2 – D4

The Whos – Cheerful, tiny citizens of Whoville
Jungle Creatures – Playful and varied animals in the Jungle of Nool
