Equity Statement and Welcome

Welcome to the mathematics department at Santa Monica College, a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). Our staff, faculty and tutors welcome you to our learning community, which promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion. We are dedicated and recognize our responsibility to contribute to reducing equity gaps in mathematics education for historically marginalized groups, particularly Black and Latinx students. The success of students in mathematics is a shared responsibility with the campus community and thus we partner with our colleagues to strengthen the student support network.

Culturally responsive and active learning teaching practices drive department pedagogy to engage, motivate, and inspire students to develop the skills and critical thinking needed for real-world math applications and careers in STEM. We include and value the achievements of underserved racial groups who have contributed significantly to the field of mathematics.

Our staff, faculty and tutors are here to guide and support you in the learning process, provide you with a variety of flexible learning resources and help you achieve your academic goals.

We provide our students a variety of flexible programs (please see the list given below) designed to each student's unique gifts and needs. We are here to help you learn and grow academically, assist you with exploring career paths, and encourage you to reach your academic and career goals. The following is a list of the support that the Mathematics Department offers our students, and we highly encourage you to take advantage of these learning resources. The Mathematics Department of Santa Monica College and the Math Lab are located in the Math Complex (MC). The department has full-time faculty members, part-time faculty members, as well as a student support staff who work together to serve the mathematical needs of the students at SMC. We offer the standard lower division (first and second year) college-level classes. Classes start as early as 6:45 a.m. and end as late as 10 p.m. We also offer accelerated classes wherein one semester students complete the material traditionally offered in two separate classes.
