DANCE 19A, Beginning Ballroom Dance • 2 units.

This course provides students with the opportunity to learn various social dance forms. It is designed for students with no dance experience as well as experienced dance students seeking an introduction to social dance. Examples of dance forms that may be included are: Fox Trot, Waltz, Tango, Swing, Rumba, Cha Cha and Samba. The course will explore differences and similarities between styles and techniques while developing coordination and partnering skills. Study of the dance forms in their historical and cultural contexts and development of individual choreography will enhance the student's knowledge of each form and encourage creativity.

This course will introduce the art, technology, language, and appreciation of film, exploring the varieties of film experience, film and the other arts, and the ways of viewing. Students will learn about the basic cinematic techniques and structures, including mise-en-scene and montage, use of cinematic time and space, the image, soundtrack, and the script. Consideration will also be given to analyzing the fundamentals of film production, directing, acting, and editing; how the elements of the production process are analyzed separately, then brought together to show how they create the emotional and intellectual impact of the film experience. Film examples will be screened in class.
This course is intended as a beginning course to introduce students to cinema.

This course develops, analyzes, and interprets confidence intervals for population parameters, hypothesis testing for both one and two populations, correlation and regression, ANOVA, and test for independence. This course develops statistical thinking through the study of applications in variety of disciplines. This course provides a supportive atmosphere for older adults - from beginners to more advanced students - to explore and experiment with self expression through drawing. Older adult students learn drawing skills, elements of design, composition, and creativity, as well as drawing techniques for representative or stylistic effect. As well, students learn to interpret the perceived "real world" in a two-dimensional field, and to improve their observation and hand-eye coordination. The course focuses on the processes by which one makes art, exposes students to different approaches, and challenges students to think about what they are doing or trying to do.

This course provides a opportunity for older adults to learn to see the human form and draw the anatomy of the human figure. This supportive class explores basic anatomy, movement, and skeletal structure of the figure using live models. Through demonstrations, class exercises, individual instruction, and guidance, beginning students learn basic life drawing skills, while more advanced students sharpen their skills in capturing the physical attributes of the model and expressiveness of the pose.

Gardening for Birds and Bugs
Loss of habitat and food sources are a major driver in the declining of bird and beneficial insect populations. Even in today’s densely populated urban environment we can still make a difference by restoring and creating habitat in both public and private spaces. This seminar will emphasize how this restoration can be achieved, whether on one’s own property or in public spaces. Additionally, it will cover how this can be accomplished by using native plants suitable to each particular area as well as practices that enhance the habitat value of the area. Resources will be provided for researching plants and the fauna they support, planting tips, maintenance tips, and next steps. This will include local retailers of native plants, contractors, and even how to advocate for habitat-sustaining landscape in public projects. The seminar will conclude with a brief field trip to the adjoining Legacy Park restoration area for examples of restoration practices.

Explore the leading technique in voice work for actors today! Fitzmaurice Voicework uses modified yoga postures to unblock the breath and open the voice. Learn a series of exercises that promote vocal freedom, resonance, and power, and that can help you uncover deep layers of tension that might be hindering your voice and creative expression. These techniques can be used as a highly effective vocal/physical warm-up to incorporate into any training routine you use. Bring to class a yoga mat and small pillow.
