Who is Eligible to Receive Services in the Disabled Student Program?

 

Any Santa Monica College student with a verifiable disability who is unable to benefit from the regular programs and services offered by the college due to the current educational limitations of a disability, and need accommodations to mitigate their disability related educational limitations, is eligible to receive services.

According to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1991 (ADA), a person with a disability is described as :

• Having a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities

• Having a record of such impairment

• Being regarded as having such impairment

 

Types of disabilities that may be covered by the ADA include, but are

not limited to the following:

 

• Mobility impairment

• Diabetes

• Visual impairment

• Chronic illnesses

• Deaf or Hard of Hearing

• HIV and AIDS

• Acquired brain injury

• Psychiatric disabilities

• Epilepsy

• Specific learning disabilities

• Muscular Dystrophy

• ADHD/ADD

• Multiple Sclerosis

• Intellectual disabilities

• Cancer

 • Recovered drug or alcohol addiction
