Francis VillanuevaPolitical Science - Transfer to University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)

Two years ago, I graduated high school knowing I could’ve done better. I was disappointed that I didn’t get in to the schools I applied to, but more disappointed that I didn’t even apply to any of the UCs because I felt I wasn’t competitive enough.

SMC gave me a second chance to prove that I’m capable of being a high-achieving student who belongs at a UC campus. UCLA was my transfer goal — I felt that SMC gave me the best opportunity to achieve that goal.

SMC has an incredibly diverse community. It is through meeting my peers that I have been able to listen and see the different lives we all live, and find solutions to the problems we all face as a collective society. Thanks to being exposed to new ideas, experiences, and perspectives, I’ve been able to endure the many hardships of being a college student. I feel prepared to continue to take on new challenges from here on out in a potential career in law and public service.

The community college route is not the easiest journey or most popular choice, but if you let the process play out despite the hardships and difficulties that come your way, it can be one of the most rewarding opportunities of your life
