My journey through SMC is undoubtedly unique, yet its essence resonates with the common struggles of diligent college students striving to reach the starting line of young adulthood. Allow me to explain: Born in Santa Monica, California, to the juxtaposition of my parents’ divergent aspirations - my father yearning for Chile, my mother longing for the U.S. - I found myself navigating a tumultuous path from an early age. My upbringing was shaped by constant relocation, from the vibrant streets of Chile to the bustling neighborhoods of California and Oregon, all while bearing witness to my father's valiant battle against terminal bone marrow cancer.

Amidst the turmoil, my family’s resilience was unrelenting. Though financial hardships loomed large, exacerbated by my father's ailing health, I endeavored to lighten the burden, working two jobs (McDonalds and Ritz Carlton Hotel) during my high school years in Chile. Our return to the States coincided with the onset of the pandemic, thrusting me into the workforce at Starbucks while harboring aspirations for higher education.

The path to SMC was not without its hurdles; initially labeled an international student, I could afford only a single class. Yet, through perseverance and tenacity, I transcended this barrier, ascending to full-time student status. As I prepare to graduate with honors, my sights set on UCLA, I reflect on the shared aspirations of my peers. Though my tale may be unique, its essence - the pursuit of self-improvement - mirrors the narratives of countless classmates within the class of 2024.

SMC has profoundly shaped my life and career trajectory in ways I could never have imagined. Initially, it provided me with a gateway to becoming an integral part of a vibrant and diverse academic community. While this may seem trivial to some, coming from a financially strained background in Santiago, Chile, it was a beacon of hope that provided an opportunity that I hadn't even considered possible. Attending SMC instilled in me a profound sense of hope. It showed me that regardless of one's circumstances or background, with determination, discipline and resilience, anyone can gradually reshape their destiny for the better. This realization was a revelation, igniting a belief in the transformative power of incremental change in the present moment.

Above all, SMC has quietly bolstered my inner confidence, emboldening me to embrace new challenges fearlessly. It taught me that failure, far from being a setback, is perhaps the most invaluable teacher on the path to growth and self-discovery. This subtle empowerment has been the most impactful influence on my journey, empowering me to step out of my comfort zone and seize the endless possibilities that lie ahead.

SMC served as the indispensable catalyst that propelled me toward my aspirations, bridging the gap between my humble beginnings and the illustrious UCLA community. This distinguished institution, with its world-renowned faculty, offers a rare opportunity not readily available in many parts of the world, especially in developing nations.

By providing a pathway to the esteemed University of California network, SMC opened doors that seemed unimaginable. Beyond mere accessibility, the college equipped me with the essential tools and knowledge needed to thrive in the rigorous academic environment awaiting me at UCLA. The tireless dedication of my professors, who went above and beyond to prepare me for the challenges ahead, instilled in me a profound sense of readiness and confidence.

This confidence, nurtured by the guidance and mentorship of SMC’s faculty, is a priceless gift that empowers me to tackle any obstacle with determination and resilience. With this invaluable foundation, I am poised to chart my own course and reach the heights of my aspirations, whether it be scaling the metaphorical Mount Everest of academic pursuits or pursuing my passion for philosophy at UCLA. SMC has not just provided me with an education; it has equipped me with the courage and conviction to pursue my dreams relentlessly, wherever they may lead.

A huge shoutout to (Noah) Holden Sonnenberg, a shining example of hard work, kindness, and dedication. As my shift supervisor at Starbucks, and a former UCLA student, Holden’s unwavering fairness and compassion left a lasting impression on me.

Despite juggling a demanding workload, Holden always went above and beyond to support his team while exceling academically. His remarkable ability to balance his studies with his  responsibilities, and private life as a supervisor was truly inspiring. What’s even more admirable is that Holden’s achievements were earned through sheer determination and perseverance, despite coming from a privileged background. That is one of the reasons I hold him in such high regard.

As it turned out he graduated with a degree in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and Applied Mathematics, and today is a math teacher. After he graduated we stayed in contact and our friendship has grown. His story inspired me to chase after my dream of studing philosophy at UCLA. Holden’s journey from UCLA student to math teacher exemplifies the transformative power of education and hard work. His willingness to give back to his community through tutoring, even after a long day of teaching, speaks volumes about his character and commitment to helping others succeed. I am incredibly grateful for Holden’s friendship and mentorship, which have played a significant role in shaping my academic journey and fostering my pursuit of excellence.

To all current and future SMC students: As you step onto campus for the first time, filled with excitement and anticipation, remember that your journey through Santa Monica College is more than just a path to academic achievement—it's an opportunity for personal growth, connection, and transformation. Throughout my time at SMC, I discovered the profound value of forging genuine connections with classmates and professors. These relationships, built on mutual respect and support, have been a source of strength and inspiration, guiding me through challenges and celebrating successes.

One of the most important lessons I learned at SMC was not from a textbook, but from the wisdom of Marcel Proust. “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.”  His words remind us to embrace the beauty and wonder of everyday life, to see the magic in the seemingly ordinary, and to approach each day with fresh eyes and an open heart. As you navigate the ups and downs of college life, remember that true discovery lies not in seeking new landscapes, but in cultivating a mindset of curiosity, gratitude, and appreciation for the world around you. Cherish the connections you make, embrace the opportunities for growth and learning, and never underestimate the power of seeing the world through new eyes. Your journey at SMC is just beginning, and the possibilities are endless. Seize every opportunity, embrace every challenge, and let the magic of discovery guide you forward. Wishing you all the best on your academic odyssey.
