Racist/Hateful Text Messages | Reminder: No Racism, Unlawful Discrimination & Harassment at SMC

SMC Community:

Earlier this week, it was reported in the national press that hateful, racist text messages targeting LGBTQ+ and Latinx/Hispanic individuals across the nation were being investigated by the FBI. We have learned that at least one undocumented SMC student received a similar anonymous text message. These messages came on the heels of racist messages targeting Black & Brown individuals that were sent last week. In the days ahead, based on these actions, it seems likely that such messages or actions targeting marginalized groups will continue to be disseminated with the intent of being intimidating, and spreading fear and anxiety.

This email is a reminder to our college community that there is no room for racism, unlawful discrimination, and harassment at SMC. This college’s commitment to sustaining an inclusive environment where hate, racism, and bigotry have no place remains unwavering. We will continue to advocate for the right of all our students to freely pursue higher education without external threats that undermine their humanity and identities.

Santa Monica College will continue to stand as a beacon of open access and educational equity. In the days to come, through the Student Equity Center, the EpiCenter and various other college programs, this college will continue to provide resources and spaces for all members of the college community—including undocumented, racially minoritized, and LGBTQ+ individuals, as well as those who belong to other marginalized groups—to help them feel safe, supported, and nurtured.

Remember—there is no room for hate at Santa Monica College.
