Performance Features Works by Guest Artists Leonard “Inner G” Flores and SMC Alum Jordan Slaffey

SANTA MONICA, CA — Santa Monica College's innovative and widely praised Synapse Contemporary Dance Theater will showcase new works Nov. 9-10 by award-winning faculty artists, professional guest artists, and student choreographers. The performances include dances choreographed by guest artists Leonardo "Inner-G" Flores and SMC alum Jordan Slaffey. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, and Sunday, Nov. 10, in The Eli & Edythe Broad Stage at the SMC Performing Arts Center, located at 1310 11th Street (at Santa Monica Boulevard), Santa Monica.

The concert features Postmodern, Contemporary, and Jazz, as well as Hip Hop, House, Fusion, and more. In addition to works by guest artists, the program will present dances by faculty choreographers Seda Aybay, Angela Jordan, Jae Lee, Mark Tomasic, and Vanessa Van Wormer, as well as student choreographers Sophia Aponte, Durami Chang, Jada Richmond, and April Torres.

  • Guest artist Leonardo "Inner-G" Flores will present “The Conductor,” which showcases a reactive relationship between dancers and music, and highlights variations in energy manipulation within Popping, House, and Hip Hop to create a Street Dance Orchestra.
  • Guest artist and SMC alum Jordan Slaffey will present “How free do you want to be?” which examines the struggle for rebirth, rejuvenation, and regeneration within the context of House and Contemporary dance styles.
  • Faculty choreographer Angela Jordan will presentBlue,” celebrating strong, determined, and victorious women.
  • Student choreographer Durami Chang will present “La Li Li La La,” dedicated to Asian women and all the times they have been silenced.
  • Additionally, the concert will feature guest company Entity Contemporary Dance presenting an excerpt from their latest work, “In honor of all the times I wasn’t myself.”

Synapse Contemporary Dance Theater has a longstanding reputation for artistic excellence and innovation. Since it was founded more than 50 years ago, the student ensemble has performed throughout the nation, including the Electric Lodge in Venice; the Cast Theater in Hollywood; the Getty Center in Los Angeles; and the American College Dance Association Conference in Arizona, California, Georgia, New Jersey, New Mexico, and Utah.
