Thomas (Tom) Chen is professor of Life Sciences at Santa Monica College (SMC) and has taught various courses for Bio majors and non-majors. Tom has held positions as professor at the University of Tennessee, postdoctoral fellow at Colorado State University, senior staff fellow at the NIH, and was visiting professor at the Medical University of South Carolina and Stanford Medical School. Tom’s research focuses on reproductive endocrinology, infertility, anti-cancer drug Taxol, and environmental endocrine disruptors. He has been active at the national and regional levels in promoting students from traditionally marginalized populations to careers in endocrinology, cell/molecular biology, and biotechnology. He has also conducted research on under-recognized cross-cultural minority role models in Bioscience as a Global Studies Fellow at Stanford University. Tom is a Co-PI on NSF and Keck Foundation funded projects to establish an equity-centered Biotechnology Technician Education program at SMC, and is currently serving on an NSF grant review panel.
