Biotech Frequently Asked Questions

The Biotechnology Program prepares students for industry-recognized certification exams. The program also offers certificates and an A.S. degree in Biotechnology that is approved by the California Community College Chancellor’s Office:

• Certificate of Achievement – Biotechnology/Life Sciences Laboratory Assistant 
• Certificate of Achievement – Biotechnology & Cell Science Laboratory Technician
• Associate degree – Biotechnology

Most courses required to earn certificate(s) in the program are transferable to UC and/or CSU campuses. It is your responsibility to check with the counseling staff at your specific school of choice to confirm course transferability.

Completing formal training in the Biotechnology Program at SMC and gaining internship experience is key to getting a job in the industry.

You can have your courses reviewed and approved to satisfy one or more requirements towards a biotechnology certificate pathway. Please contact biotech@smc.edu to meet with program staff to discuss your specific situation.

The tuition for the required courses is the current tuition cost to attend SMC.
