CalWORKs Child Care Services

CalWORKs students may be eligible to receive low cost or free childcare while attending Santa Monica College. Student that qualify may select a licensed Center, Family Day Care, or an Exempt (blood relative) provider to care for their children while they attend classes.
The unit requirements are as follows:
Fall and/or Spring Semesters
  • To qualify for full-time childcare, you must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 units or a combination of at least 6 units and a 17-hour work week.
Summer and/or Winter Sessions
  • To qualify for full-time childcare, you must be enrolled in a total of 6 units or a combination of 3 units and a 17-hour work week.
All CalWORKs student who want full-time childcare and who are not exempt, must participate in a 32-hour per week schedule. Each class unit is equal to 2.66 hours. You can meet this requirement by taking 12 units or combining work with school to equal 32 hours.
