SMC Receives $100,000 for Students in Nursing, Education

Scholarship check presented to SMC

The Santa Monica College Foundation has received a $100,000 donation from the Santa Monica Bay Chapter of the American Association of University Women for a new scholarship to be earmarked primarily for women students pursuing careers in nursing and education.

The gift has a two-fold significance – it is the largest one-time contribution from this chapter of the AAUW – and the last. An official said that the deaths of three founding members and a lack of recruits led to the decision to dissolve this chapter.

SMC adjunct kinesiology professor Jo Kidd, current chapter president, and treasurer Beryl Markiles handed over the check for $100,000 to SMC President Dr. Chui L. Tsang in his office on April 21. JoAnn Ortiz, Executive Director of the SMC Foundation was also present.

“We’re thrilled with this donation,” said SMC Foundation Associate Director Charles Potts. “We have been receiving monies from AAUW since 1992. This is a great way to be able to provide for students in perpetuity, and still remember those women who came together to start this chapter of the organization.”

The AAUW was founded in 1881 and strives to promote equity for women and girls through advocacy, education and research in the country and around the globe.
