Eligibility for Student Employment

Federal Work Study (FWS) Job Opportunities

FWS is only available to students who have applied for and received a Financial Aid Award Letter with a Federal Work Study allotment.

If you are an F-1 Visa student, you may not apply for FWS positions. FWS students are paid 100% through their Financial Aid Award. F-1 Visa students cannot apply for FWS positions.

Student Help Job Opportunities

All SMC students can apply for Student Help jobs as long as they are enrolled in at least 12 Units.
F-1 Visa students can ONLY apply for “Student Help” positions. Many of these positions require that you already have a Social Security Card. For more information regarding attaining a Social Security Card, visit the International Student Center located in Counseling Village near Pearl Street). If it is not already stated in the job advertisement, ask the interviewer if they will sponsor you for a Social Security Card if hired.

Pay as a Student Worker

All on-campus positions pay $10 per hour. Students may work up to 20 hours per week during the Fall and Spring semesters if the department you are working in has "Student Help" District Funds. If the department that you are working for has Student Help funds, you may be able to work during the Summer and/or Winter. You will need to discuss this with your supervisor.

If you are a "Federal Work Study" student, we recommend that you work no more than 10 hours per week in order to not exhaust your Work Study Award before the semester ends.

Sustainability Dept. Student Worker

Job Description: Position focuses on maintaining a friendly and educational atmosphere in the Center for Environmental & Urban Studies. This includes supporting the college's commitment to reducing its environmental impact associated with transportation, climate change, water use, waste, chemical and energy. These staff members work with the Project Manager for Sustainability as well as various governance committees and student groups to achieve mutual campus sustainability goals. Projects include transportation planning, events, green campus tours, urban gardening, cleaning, reception, and greenhouse gas inventory. Clubs include Bike Club, Club Grow, Eco Action and Care Club. Recycling Student Worker

Computer Lab Assistant

Requirements: Experience and knowledge of PC and MAC, at least one computer class taken at SMC, excellent work ethics, must be able to work till closing the lab Mon -Thurs till 10:30 pm and Fridays till 10:00 pm, must be able to work on Fridays. Prior work experience with computers preferred.

Job Description: Do you envision a different future for Los Angeles? One where cycling is seen as equally viable as cars? Join the SMC Bike Club team to help make it a reality. We coordinate the development and implementation of SMC’s bike campaign by actively empowering, educating, and encouraging the SMC community to ride safely, and confidently, as both a form of transportation and recreation. You will work with students, staff and the local cycling community through educational events, bike repair and group rides. An understanding of urban cycling issues, an outgoing personality and bike mechanic skills are all pluses. Bike Repair Tent Hours are Tues and Thurs 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Job Description: Do you have graphic design skills and an interest in sustainability issues? The Center for Environmental and Urban Studies does outreach to students and staff on many issues. Projects range from posters, fliers, email messages, reports, logo design, banner ads, and brochures. You will work with the Project Manager for Sustainability as well as various governance committees and student groups to achieve mutual campus sustainability goals. When not designing you will be required to help other student workers on various projects including Earth Week and Sustainability Week, etc. Visit the Sustainability at SMC website for more information.

Requirements: Federal Work Study requirements apply. Graphic Design skills are required. Must know Photoshop, Illustrator, and familiar with Adobe Acrobat and Publisher. Assists students and alumni in person or on the phone; Generates original Social Media content; Executes comprehensive office duties including equipment use/upkeep, and paper/digital filing; Assists in events; Performs other related duties as requested or assigned.

Requirements: Must have experience with using Social Media mediums (including deciphering we/Social Media analytics?. Must be able to speak, read, and write English without difficulty. Must be able to lift at least 25lbs. and be physically active. Candidates with experience or interest in Business or Communication strongly preferred.

Job Description: Opportunity for a student who has strong Customer Service Skills. Front Desk Reception: Receives and reviews incoming documents for completeness, accuracy, signatures; assist customers in person or on the phone; computers (basic email; MS Word, & Excel); fill paper trays in office equipment, etc. able to learn how to use & un-jam office equipment, such as-copiers, printers, fax machines, scanner, etc. Student Activities: Assist in outdoor & indoor activities or events, such as: setting-up & clean-up, stocking & delivering items or boxes, etc.; Performs other related duties as requested.

Requirements: Must have strong Customer Service skills and be able to follow written & verbal instructions. Must have at least 6 months of Customer Service experience, such as volunteering or working assisting people & answering questions. Must be able to speak, read & write English without difficulty. Must be able to lift at least 25lbs. and be physically active.
