Q: What are the basic requirements to apply for a scholarship?A: Six (6) units completed at SMC; greater than 2.0 G.P.A.; making satisfactory progress. Q: What is the general process?A: When you fill out the scholarship application, you are then matched to a scholarship based on the information you have provided from your application and other requested information; you are considered for all the scholarships for which you are qualified. Qualifying for an award does not guarantee receipt of such award. Q: How many units must I be enrolled in to receive the award, once I have been chosen?A: Students need to be enrolled in six (6) units on campus in the fall semester. Q: What if I have already earned a degree from the U.S. or another country, can I still apply?A: No, the scholarships and awards are not for students with BS/BA Degree. Q: What are the basic amounts of the scholarship awards?A: Scholarship awards range anywhere from $250 to $2,000. Q: What should I write in my personal statement?A: This area of the application provides you with an opportunity to discuss your academic goals, career aspirations, as well as indicate notable achievements you've accomplished or financial challenges and/or personal hardship(s) that impact your educational goals. For continuing students, your personal statement should also reflect your participation in SMC clubs, activities, and other leadership experiences. Q: Is the personal statement required in order for my application to be considered?A: Yes. Q: Am I required to secure letters of recommendation in order to be considered for a scholarship?A: In most cases, no. However, there are some scholarships that do require letters so be sure to check the ones you're hoping to be considered for, and proceed accordingly. Q: Can I receive multiple scholarships in one academic cycle?A: Yes. SMC Foundation works to provide as many equitable opportunities for our students as possible. There are instances where a student may receive more than one (1) scholarship in an academic year. Q: Is attending the Scholarship Awards Ceremony really mandatory? A: Yes. Q: Once I receive notification of receiving my scholarship, how do I pick up my award check?A: All scholarship awardees are required to follow the verification process. Once you've completed this process, you will be notified of your award being ready for pick-up. Q: Will I lose my scholarship if I forget to submit the verification materials by the December 31st deadline?A: Yes. If you do not submit the required materials to claim your award(s) by December 31st, the scholarship reverts back to the Foundation. Q: How do I know if I will qualify for a specific scholarship award? Do I have to submit additional supplemental materials?A: Some scholarships require supplemental materials (see scholarship catalogue). Supplemental information can include electronic images of artwork, graphic art designs, photographs, and employment verification letters. If you are submitting any requested supplemental documents, please attach them in the Supplemental Document Submission section of the application. Q: Where is the SMC Financial Aid and Scholarship Office located?A: The SMC Financial Aid & Scholarship Office is located on the main SMC Campus, Drescher Hall D150. Q: Where is the SMC Foundation Office located?A: The SMC Foundation office is located at 1516 Pico Blvd, just west of the main campus. Entrance to the office is on the second floor. Q: When will I know if I received a scholarship?A: Scholarship recipients will be notified via email by the Financial Aid & Scholarship Office in May. Q: Will my scholarship award be mailed to me?A: No. The Foundation will notify you when your award is ready to be picked up.
