Welcome to Supplemental Instruction

The Spring 2015 Application period will open soon.

Please check back the first week of Winter Session to apply for any open Spring 2015 SI Leader positions.

Please read the job description and qualifications carefully.

What is Supplemental Instruction (SI)?

Supplemental Instruction is an academic assistance program at Santa Monica College that provides free out-of-class sessions to students enrolled in specific courses.  The SI sessions operate differently than the services provided by the various tutoring labs on campus in the sense that SI leaders do not tutor students or assist students with homework problems.  In SI sessions, SI leaders engage students in interactive group activities to help them learn course concepts, prepare for exams, and learn effective study skills.

Who is an SI Leader? What does an SI leader do?

SI leaders are SMC students who have successfully completed specific courses and who help students understand course material, provide exam reviews, clarify questions about course content, and share effective study strategies.

What SI Sessions are offered?

SI is typically offered for traditionally difficult basic skills courses such as, Math 81, 85, 31, 20, and English 21A and English 85.  Recently, SMC has begun to offer SI in courses such as Math 7, 8, 54 and science courses such as Biology 2, 3, 21, Chemistry 10, and 11.  Additionally, we are now offering SI in Accounting 1, Economics 1, Spanish 1, and Physics.  Please see the SI Sessions Schedule page for a list of the days/times of the weekly Supplemental Sessions of each course.
