Composition instruction is offered through the Applied Music Program and requires an audition. Interested students should be prepared to submit at least two contrasting original compositions in both notated score and audio formats. Please go to the Applied Program​ site for additional information.

Below are two videos from recent Applied Music Benefit Concerts featuring former Applied Composition student Maria Moraru (pictured above) as composer, pianist, and conductor. Also featured is a recording of former SMC Applied Composer Chris Durian's Trio for Flute, Cello, and Piano with Applied Faculty performers Cathy Larson (Flute) and Kevan Torfeh (Cello) and former Applied Piano Student Daniel Thompson. 

Former Applied Composition Student Anoush Saboktakin's "Changes" for Chamber Orchestra was composed for the 2008 SMC Orchestration Workshop and is performed here by the CSUN Studio Ensemble Orchestra. His original music for the Opening Scene of "Terminator 3" was composed for one of his film scoring classes at CSUN.
