Program Admission Priorities

In order to meet the SRI Program recommended criteria, we ask that students plan to remain enrolled at Santa Monica College full time (12 units) for a minimum of 1.5 - 2 years. Additionally the committee is looking for:
·           Continuing SMC Students
o   Math 20-ready (Intermediate Algebra or higher) by Fall 2015
o   1.5- 2 years of SRI program commitment
o   Recommended cumulative GPA of ~2.8 or higher
o   Planned Fall enrollment in Math and Science courses
·           Incoming SMC Students (Current High School Students)
o   Complete SMC Application  
o   Minimum of 2 years of high school science
o   Math 20-ready (Intermediate Algebra or higher) by Fall 2015
o   Recommended ~3.00 High School GPA
o   Interest in one of the STEM fields
o   Planned Fall enrollment in Math and Science courses


Application Instructions


The SRI Program has a limited number of spots open every year; therefore, we run a competitive application process based on the criteria listed above. In order to begin the application process, please make sure that you complete the following steps:


Application Deadline: Thursday, May 7th, 2015 at 4pm 
New SMC Students (current high school students):
Complete the SMC application process prior to attempting the SRI online application. All applicants must have an SMC ID and SMC email account to access the SRI application form.

Current or Continuing SMC Students:
Log in to the online application using your current SMC email account and fill out each required field.
Before opening the application please note the following important items:
  • You MUST use your SMC Email to log in to the application.
  • Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
  • ALL transcripts must be postmarked or delivered by 5/7/15 in order to meet the application deadline. Transcripts received after 5/7/15 will not be accepted.
  • You WILL NOT be able to save and return to your application once you begin, please allow yourself enough time to complete the entire form.
  • Duplicate applications: If you fill out the form more than once, only the most recent application will be reviewed.
  • Know your transfer GPA (CC students) or High Shcool GPA (New SMC Students). We will use the transcripts from EVERY institution attended to verify your GPA upon acceptance to the program.
  • Calculate your GPA in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) courses: for assistance calculating your GPA use this link:   Online GPA Calculator
  • Prepare clear and concise short answer responses to the following questions (175 word maximum per response). Your responses will play a significant role in scoring your application, so please craft them carefully.

SRI Application Short-Answer Questions

1.    Why are you interested in pursuing a major in Science Technology, Engineering, and/or Mathematics (STEM)? (Be specific and give examples of experiences that have made an impact on your STEM Interest)


2.    What challenges have you had to overcome thus far in pursuing your educational goals? What potential challenges do you foresee in meeting your educational goals in the future?

3.   How will the SMC/UCLA Science and Research program help you reach your academic and career goals? Please be specific and provide any examples from what you may already know about the program. 


4.   Finally, if you DO NOT meet one or more of the SRI program priorities listed above but believe the SRI selection committee should consider your application anyway, please tell us why.
