Cosmetology Department


The world around us is an exciting place of color, shape and beauty. In the cosmetology department at Santa Monica College, we bring this beauty to reality. We welcome you to join our program where you can obtain the education to succeed in the cosmetology, skin care and nail care industries. These well established programs will prepare you for a professional career, a career change or advancement in your existing career.

We offer a variety of classes to help you obtain that goal you have been dreaming about. Note that to enter classes, students must have a valid transcript and registration. Also, all NEW Cosmetology students MUST attend a mandatory orientation. Orientations occur at 4pm on select dates mentioned below and are held in the Business Building in Room 143/B Upcoming dates are:

  • Tuesday, April 26, 2016
  • Tuesday, May 31, 2016
  • Tuesday, July 12, 2016
  • Tuesday, September 20, 2016
  • Tuesday, November 15, 2016

Our program prepares you to take the state board examination for a cosmetology license completing 1600 hours, a skin care license completing 600 hours, or a nail care license completing 400 hours. We have a cosmetology teacher's training program. Santa Monica College also offers an AA degree in cosmetology.

High school students in the 11th and 12th grade may begin this program concurrently with the high school program when approved by the high school principal.

Career Options

The cosmetology career is an exciting one and may lead you to a career of being a platform artist, educator, stylist, colorist, salon owner, sales representative, makeup artist, work in the television and movie industries, on cruise ships and many other wonderful professions.

There are many careers available for the cosmetologist: stylist, esthetician, manicurist, educator, colorist, salon owner, salon manager, sales representative, makeup artist.
