  2. Novotney, A., (2010), Engaging the millennial learner: New research suggests that offering variety may be the best way to engage today’s undergraduate,  American Psychological Association Monitor, Vol. 41, No. 3

Days 3 and 4: Differentiated Instruction with Dr. Mira Pak.
Please read the following article and be prepared to discuss and expand on the ideas on Wednesday and Thursday of week one.

Day 6: Technology in the Classroom with Rushton Hurley
  1. Attendees are asked to do three things prior to the workshop. Please be sure to be prepared day-of.Make sure you can get into Google Drive. You must set up a free Gmail account if you do no already have one. Check that you can then access Google Drive by logging in to your Gmail account as you normally do, opening a new tab, and going to Drive (http://drive.google.com).
  2.  Go to the resources page (http://nextvista.org/resources/) and identify at least one tool among those in the first four sections (Digital Media, Collaboration, Search and Research, and Subject-specific Resources) about which you hope to learn more.
  3.  Watch 4-5 videos from among the finalists of contests Next Vista has run (http://nextvista.org/tag/finalist/) (most of these are between 60-120 seconds).  Make some notes as to whether asking students to make videos in which they creatively and concisely explain fundamental concepts central to (or prerequisite for) your courses might be of value, especially with course concepts students traditionally find most challenging.

Day 7: Reading Apprenticeship with Jean Paik-Schoenberg and Lilit Haroyan
  1.  Read chapter 2 of Reading for Understanding (link to PDF below). Choose 3 Golden Lines and be prepared to discuss them. (A Golden Line is a statement or passage that has special meaning to you or strikes you as important or especially interesting.)
  2.  Bring a text and a syllabus you use in the classroom. This can be a few pages from a textbook, a short article, assignment, etc.

PARKING
On day one of the institute, please try to arrive 10-15 minutes early. We recommend parking in the front of the building, in STUDENT PARKING ONLY (if you do not already have a current Summer Faculty parking decal). When you come in, you will receive a binder with all of your materials for the duration of the institute, including an 8-day parking pass. This will need to be placed on your car’s dash, visible for parking attendants, as SMCPD WILL be issuing citations for unauthorized cars. You can print additional copies if you happen to forget or lose yours by clicking HERE, or ask a Center staff member for a replacement if lost on-site.

ROOM/FACILITIES
The FSI will take place in room 121 which is located on the first floor of the building. Signs will guide you to the room where the FSI will take place.  If you would like to use your laptop, iPad, or other technology for notes, etc., please feel free to do so.  We ask that you please bring any wires and connections you may need for your device. Because it is a “smart room” with many electronic devices and computers, no food or drink will be allowed.

REFRESHMENTS AND LUNCH OPTIONS
We will provide coffee and water in the mornings and afternoons, but if you’d like to bring your own refresments you may. No food will be allowed in the main room, but an eating area will be available in the adjacent room, as well as outside at the shaded patio tables or in the grass. A refrigerator and microwave will be available for those who wish to bring their own lunches. We would like to recommend that you brown-bag lunch on the days it is not provided: this will help to maximize the time you get to spend debriefing and discussing the ideas presented during the day with your fellow FSIers. However, there are a few nearby restaurants within walking distance and a few others a short drive away. We will encourage you to keep within the 1-hour lunch break you are alotted, so please be mindful of time when considering lunch options. Ordering ahead and picking up food or getting delivery is encouraged - working with your fellow attendees to go in on group orders or coordinate with restaurants is also a good idea. Menus for the nearest retaurants will be included in your workshop binders, and available online.
